German Auto Brands in India


German brands have always been associated with a ‘prestige factor’ by Indian consumers. Hence, it comes as no surprise that Indian consumers have been known to show a high level of loyalty towards German automobile brands in particular.

Brands such as BMW, Audi, & Mercedes have always had positive perceptions attached to them and reek of qualities such as unparalleled quality, exceptional durability and stunning design.

Let us take a look at the major automotive German brands playing their trade in India today.

Mercedes-Benz

Founded in the year 1926 by Karl Benz and Gottleb Daimler, Mercedes-Benz is a division of the manufacturer Daimler AG. Mercedes-Benz was the first of the German marquee brands to officially enter India way back in the year 1994 and pioneered the luxury car market in India.

Headquartered in Chakan, Pune, Maharashtra, Mercedes-Benz with a presence in 40 cities and nearly 83 outlets, has the widest network reach for any luxury car maker in India. Furthermore, it has been the recipient of several awards including been adjudged as the number one ranked luxury brand by J.D. Power Customer Service Index in the year 2015.

BMW

Established in 1916 by Franz Josef Popp, Petak Grba, and Renato Ditrih, BMW made its official foray into the Indian market in the year 2006 although they were present in India through a direct import option prior to that. Widely known as one of the best car companies in the world, BMW is headquartered in Gurugram.

It also has a parts warehouse in Mumbai, manufacturing plant in Chennai and also a training centre in Gurugram. Part of the BMW Group, MINI and Rolls-Royce are the other two brands which are also a part of their Indian portfolio.

Volkswagen Group



The largest car manufacturer in the world, Volkswagen Group officially entered the Indian market in 2001 with the launch of Skoda. Headquartered in Pune, Maharashtra, Volkswagen Group’s current portfolio in India comprises of:

  • Audi India

Established in March 2007 in India, Audi is one of the most popular luxury car companies in India owing to their sensational designs and aspirational value. With nearly 40 dealerships spread across 11 states and 2 union territories in India, Audi has witnessed an impressive Year on Year growth in India since it’s entry.

  • Porsche India

Headquartered in Mumbai, India, Porsche was founded in 1931 by Ferdinand Porsche and has been selling luxury cars in India since the year 2004 and started self-owned operations in India in 2012. Currently, Porsche has its presence across Gurugram, Kochi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Ahmedabad. Porsche sold over 400 cars in India last year.

  • Volkswagen India Private Limited

Europe's most successful car brand, Volkswagen was founded in 1937 and like many others, operates a manufacturing plant in Chakan, Pune, Maharashtra. Established in India in the year 2007, Volkswagen India currently has 119 showrooms and 113 service centres spread across nearly 101 cities all over India.

  • Skoda Auto India Private Limited

The first of the Volkswagen group to venture into India, Skoda Auto has been operating since 2001 and has its manufacturing plant at Shendra near Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Škoda currently has a presence of 67 dealerships and 74 service centres across India. It's a Chez brand owned by Volkswagen.

  • Lamborghini

Officially established in 1963, premium luxury car manufacturer Automobili Lamborghini India Pvt. Ltd formally entered the Indian market in 2006. Currently, Lamborghini has it’s presence in three Indian cities viz. Mumbai, New Delhi and Bengaluru. It's an Italian brand owned by Volkswagen.
